- Pavement sealer should not be applied when the nighttime temperature is expected to fall below 45-50 degrees (before drying). Avoid contracting the sealer under dropping nighttime temperature, as the sealant applied in cold weather is prone to failure.
- Avoid “left over materials”. Never contract a job to someone who stops and says we have leftover materials. They may offer you a great deal, but he fails to mention that he will be using watered-down sealant or used motor oil.
- Look out for prices by units. A common scam is to charge sealant by the gallon. A good contractor provides you with a breakdown of services to be performed, never a “total” price for the whole project.
- Other rip-off tips include out-of-state license plates, claims that the job can be done only “today,” and simply showing up unannounced. If the man at your door does not have a tank that is actively mixing the sealcoating material, send him on his way!
